What is the Growth Mindset?

Your progress in the program, and in life, boils down to a simple question:

Are you born with talent or can talent be learned?

If you believe your basic abilities in areas such as intelligence, athleticism, writing, art, music, creativity, and so on are determined and limited by your genetics, then you are said to operate with a Fixed Mindset.

If you believe these core abilities can be developed and improved by anyone, then you are said to have the Growth Mindset.

Goodwin Davis believes in the Growth Mindset, and it’s the cornerstone concept for all of our instruction. We were surprised to discover that any trait can be vastly improved by any individual that consistently practices the right way over long periods of time.

We have two goals for our players:

  1. Understand and internalize the Growth Mindset
  2. Make informed decisions on which talents to develop

What is Deliberate Practice?

Deliberate practice is a method of achieving expert level performance for any skill. It’s a type of practice with a specific purpose and goals. The term is attributed to Swedish psychologist K. Anders Ericsson, who discovered that achieving world class skills is the result of years of deliberate practice rather than genetic gifts or innate talent.

Ericsson has built a career demonstrating how deliberate practice accounts for the extraordinarily high performance levels of experts in many fields, from Mozart to chess masters to NBA Hall of Famers. The good news is that this method of practice can be used by anyone to develop skills in any field. It just takes time, discipline, and a commitment to move beyond one’s comfort zone.

A single deliberate practice session might look like the following

  • Choose a specific skill to improve (i.e. making free throws)
  • Break that skill down into manageable chunks (approach the line, dribbles, grip on the ball, breathing, hand position, shooting style, follow through)
  • Visualize what perfection looks like for each chunk
  • Practice each chunk repeatedly with a goal to achieve perfection
  • Note any imperfections in form and focus on eliminating them
  • Repeat each with a specific number of perfect reps in mind (i.e. 20 straight perfect free throw baskets)
  • Record progress for the entire session
  • Set goals for the next session to improve the skill even further

Masters in music, athletics, academics, and virtually any field you can imagine use this method to achieve their extraordinary skills. True mastery requires nearly daily deliberate practice over the course of 15-20 years.

    Why are Conversation Skills important?

The ability to confidently talk to other people is a priceless skill. It will open doors for you personally and professionally, and is a key gateway to a more enjoyable life.

The good news is that becoming a strong conversationalist and communicator is a learnable skill, even for shy introverts. Improving your conversation skills will pay dividends each and every day of your life.

Imagine having complete confidence when talking with classmates or answering questions at school. Or inspiring teammates on the athletic field. How about the confidence to ask someone on a date? Or persuade an employer to hire you? These skills can help you make or save money. Or they may help you do something as simple as putting a smile on someone’s face each day.

Effectively handling and communicating with people is a rare and valuable skill. The people that learn do it have true power.

    Challenges

    Challenge #1

In a safe environment, engage someone you don't know in a conversation and offer 3 genuine compliments before the talk ends.

    Challenge #2

Engage someone in a conversation. When they begin talking about something interesting, listen carefully. Then ask the most unique open ended question that you can. If they say something like: "great question", "no one has ever asked me that", or "I've never thought of that", then you are on the right track.

    Challenge #3

Engage someone in a conversation that you normally wouldn't speak to. Ideally this is someone you don't know well.
